File extension png information
File Extension PNG is an acronym for Portable (or Public) Network Graphics. This is an image in a bitmap format, which makes use of a technology known as lossless data compression. PNG was created by Unisys as a means to improve and replace the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF). The PNG format supports grayscale, RGB (Red, Blue and Green) or palette-based (palettes of 24-bit RGB colors) images. The format was designed to enable transfer of images, not professional graphics, on the Internet. Therefore, it does not support other color spaces such as cyan, magenta and yellow.
Cannot open png files in Windows?
Not being able to open png files in Windows may be a result of registry errors or not having the appropriate application installed. It is strongly recommended that you scan your computer for registry errors (free).Nearly all PNG files use the extension “PNG” or “png”. Additionally, they are identified as MIME media type, demoted by the phrase image/png. File extension PNG is however limited to the Microsoft Windows-based computers since other systems have their own versions of the same. For instance, the PNG version for Macintosh is PNGf. The technical details of PNG vary depending on the file headers. Each PNG file starts with an eight-byte signature with hexadecimal values indicated as 89 50 4E 47 0D 0A 1A 0A. The 89 implies the high bit set used to detect transmission systems whereas 50 4E 47 is used in ASCII in which the characters stand for “PNG”. This allows a person to identify the format easily. 0D 0A and 1A are characters used as commands in DOS while the last 0A is the byte that stops the display of a file under DOS once the command type has been used as the end-of-file character.
